Child Trends Welcomes Ann Segal as Visiting Fellow

Bethesda, Md.—Child Trends today announced the appointment of Ann Segal as a visiting fellow. Segal has decades of experience working on programs that serve low-income children and families, including 22 years at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Segal is the president of Action Strategies, serving as a consultant for foundations and organizations. From 2003 until 2013, she was the senior philanthropic advisor for the domestic disadvantaged children and families docket at Wellspring Advisors, LLC.  She also spent several years as a senior manager and director of the Washington office of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, focusing on advocacy for children’s issues. At HHS, Segal served in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE), where she held the position of senior executive for human services policy, and of principal deputy assistant secretary for policy initiatives. Prior to her time in government, she established and directed a non-profit child care center, created a summer arts camp for low-income children in an urban area, served on the board of a child guidance clinic, taught fourth grade in a rural elementary school, and worked with children on the surgical floor at Boston Children’s Hospital.

She will provide Child Trends with valuable strategic counsel, support research initiatives, help mentor our research staff, as well as pursue her own work.”

Segal earned a bachelor’s degree in child development from Vassar College and a master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania. She will be based in Bethesda.
